JONATHAN APPLAUDS SIERRA LEONE’S DEMOCRATIC DECISION ON FORMER PRESIDENT BIO

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has welcomed the Sierra Leone government’s decision to withdraw criminal charges against former President Ernest Koroma, describing the move as a significant step toward national reconciliation and lasting peace.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Jonathan praised the decision to discontinue the legal proceedings and allow Koroma to return home, saying it reflects statesmanship, unity and a commitment to the country’s long-term stability.

According to him, the development demonstrates the willingness of Sierra Leone’s leadership to prioritise peace and national interest over political divisions.

Jonathan noted that the resolution highlights the importance of dialogue, mutual respect and diplomacy in resolving political disagreements, adding that lasting peace is best achieved through engagement rather than confrontation.

He commended Sierra Leonean President Julius Bio, the government and all stakeholders involved for their roles in reaching a peaceful outcome.

The former Nigerian president also praised the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), regional leaders, diplomats and mediators whose efforts contributed to the successful resolution of the matter.

Jonathan said the outcome reinforces confidence in West Africa’s ability to address its own challenges through African-led solutions and strengthens democratic stability across the region.

He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the hospitality extended to Koroma during his stay in Nigeria and acknowledged the support provided by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, in ensuring the former Sierra Leonean leader’s welfare.

Jonathan urged political leaders and citizens in Sierra Leone to build on the opportunity by promoting reconciliation, unity and sustainable development.

Koroma had faced treason and related charges over his alleged involvement in the failed 2023 coup attempt before the Sierra Leonean government formally discontinued the case, paving the way for his return to the country.
