The National Assembly has begun efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s cybersecurity framework as the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on ICT and Cybersecurity launched a joint retreat focused on improving lawmakers’ digital knowledge and preparing for key legislative reforms.
The retreat, held in Abuja during the National Assembly Digital Summit, brought together members of both committees under the theme, “Building a Future-Ready Legislative Framework: Digital Innovation, Safety and Economic Growth.”
Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, Senator Shuaib Salisu, said the programme is intended to equip lawmakers with the digital skills and knowledge needed to effectively participate in the evolving digital landscape while promoting a safer cyberspace for Nigerians.
He stressed that cyberspace must not be allowed to become a safe haven for criminal activities, noting that the digital environment requires effective governance just like the physical world.
According to Salisu, the retreat will also prepare committee members and their support staff for the planned public hearing on the proposed Cybercrime Bill, which is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s legal framework for tackling cyber threats.
He added that improving digital competence among lawmakers is essential for developing effective legislation capable of addressing emerging cybersecurity challenges and supporting the country’s digital transformation.
Also speaking, Chairman of the House Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, Adedeji Olajide, said the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s National Digital Agenda and demonstrates the legislature’s commitment to keeping pace with rapid technological advancements.
The joint retreat is part of broader efforts by the National Assembly to establish modern laws that encourage digital innovation, improve cybersecurity, and support sustainable economic development.
