Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has announced that the five governors of the South-East region have agreed to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, citing what they described as the administration’s positive impact on the region’s development.
Uzodimma, who serves as Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, made the disclosure on Wednesday during a meeting with members of the Imo State Elders Council and traditional rulers in Owerri.
The governor said the decision followed an assessment of the Federal Government’s projects and policies under the Renewed Hope Agenda, which he claimed had increased federal attention and delivered important development initiatives across the South-East.
According to Uzodimma, the governors believe political decisions should be based on performance rather than sentiment, adding that the region intends to work with the Federal Government as part of efforts to advance national development.
He revealed that the five South-East governors would soon visit President Tinubu jointly to further strengthen their relationship with the Federal Government.
Highlighting some of the administration’s interventions, Uzodimma mentioned the creation of the South East Development Commission (SEDC) as one of the major achievements of the Tinubu administration. He noted that the commission was established through legislation signed by the President in 2024 and has since received funding to begin operations.
The governor also pointed to the Federal Government’s approval of the $3 billion Eastern Rail Corridor reconstruction project, which is expected to connect Port Harcourt through the South-East to Maiduguri. He said the project would boost transportation, trade and regional integration.
He further cited ongoing access road projects around the Second Niger Bridge corridor, including the construction of dual carriageways linking communities such as Umunya, Ogbunike, Ogidi, Nkpor and Asaba, alongside additional bridge infrastructure.
Uzodimma also highlighted the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt-Aba railway line and the resumption of commercial train services as another major development that has reconnected parts of the South-East to Nigeria’s rail network.
Beyond infrastructure, the governor said the region had benefited from improved federal allocations, enhanced security initiatives and programmes such as the student loan scheme, which he said had expanded access to higher education for young Nigerians.
He called on traditional rulers and elders in Imo State to continue supporting the state’s Charter of Equity, describing it as an important framework for maintaining fairness, stability and political harmony.
The declaration comes amid growing political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development follows recent comments by Abia State Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party, who praised some of President Tinubu’s economic reforms and described them as bold steps.
