Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered the immediate suspension of all activities linked to the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in motor parks across the state following recent security concerns and violent incidents.
The directive was issued after a meeting of the Osun State Security Council, where officials reviewed the security situation and discussed measures to restore peace and order in motor parks.
According to the state government, the governor instructed the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to stop all NURTW operations in parks while clarifying that the decision does not mean the closure of the parks.
Adeleke also directed security operatives to arrest anyone collecting levies or presenting themselves as NURTW officials or executives, warning that violators could face prosecution for disturbing public peace.
The governor approved the creation of a Rapid Response Squad comprising personnel from various security agencies to monitor compliance and maintain stability across the state.
The security meeting was attended by representatives from several agencies, including the police, Department of State Services (DSS), military formations, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other relevant security bodies.
The latest action follows previous warnings from Adeleke that the state government could remove motor park management responsibilities from the NURTW and return to the Park Management System if violence linked to union activities continued.
The governor had earlier expressed concern over clashes at motor parks in Osogbo, the state capital, where reported gunshots disrupted commercial activities and caused panic among residents and commuters.
Adeleke accused some individuals linked to the disturbances of threatening public safety and called on security agencies to take immediate action against those responsible.
He also stated that he had informed senior security authorities about the situation and requested urgent intervention to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
