The Abia State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the tragic death of a family of five whose decomposing bodies were discovered inside their residence in Umuimo community, Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area.
The heartbreaking incident, uncovered on Tuesday, has left residents in disbelief as authorities work to determine what led to the deaths.
The deceased have been identified as Mr. Kachi Nnabugwu, his wife, Mrs. Chinaza Nnabugwu, and their three children.
According to residents, the family was last seen on Saturday, July 18. Concern grew after neighbours noticed they had not been seen for several days.
Community members reportedly forced open the family’s home on Tuesday morning after repeated attempts to reach them failed. Inside, they discovered the bodies in an advanced state of decomposition.
The remains were later evacuated to a mortuary, while security agencies began investigations into the incident.
Items recovered from the house reportedly included leftover food and a power generator, leading to speculation that carbon monoxide poisoning may have caused the deaths. However, officials have not confirmed the cause.
Residents believe generator fumes may have played a role in the tragedy, but authorities insist that only the outcome of an autopsy will determine what happened.
A video circulating online also showed members of the community performing traditional rites shortly after the bodies were removed from the residence.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the case was reported by the deceased’s brother after several unsuccessful attempts to contact the family.
She explained that police officers accompanied the complainant to the residence, where they forced entry after repeated knocks received no response.
Inside the house, they found the lifeless bodies of the couple and their three children.
Chinaka said detectives immediately visited the scene, conducted a preliminary inspection, documented the evidence with photographs, and transferred the bodies to the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
She added that investigations are ongoing and that the autopsy report will help determine the exact cause of death.
While many have linked the incident to possible carbon monoxide poisoning from generator fumes, investigators say they are keeping an open mind and have not ruled out other possibilities.
Authorities noted that the autopsy will establish whether the deaths resulted from generator fumes, food poisoning, an underlying medical condition, or any other cause.
