Algeria has donated four military helicopters and related equipment to Niger, strengthening defence cooperation between the two countries as security challenges continue to intensify across the Sahel.
Algeria’s Ministry of National Defence confirmed on August 9, 2026, that the military assistance included four helicopters, ammunition, spare parts, maintenance equipment and other logistical support for the Nigerien Armed Forces.
The package reportedly consists of two Mi-24 SuperHind attack helicopters and two Mi-171 transport helicopters. The aircraft are expected to enhance Niger’s ability to conduct combat operations, transport personnel and respond to attacks by armed groups operating across the central Sahel.
The donation also signals a significant improvement in relations between Algeria and Niger following a period of diplomatic tension involving Algeria and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.
Algeria and Niger rebuild defence relations
Relations between Algeria and the AES governments deteriorated sharply in April 2025 after Algeria shot down a Malian military drone near its border. The incident triggered a diplomatic backlash, with Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso recalling their ambassadors from Algiers.
However, ties began to improve in early 2026.
In February, Nigerien leader General Abdourahamane Tiani travelled to Algeria for talks with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The two sides agreed to revive bilateral security mechanisms and strengthen coordination along their shared border.
The latest military donation appears to be part of that broader effort to restore closer security cooperation.
Russia’s growing influence
Russia has also played an increasingly important role in the changing security relationships between Algeria and the Sahel states.
Moscow has supported diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions between Algeria and Mali, while maintaining close military ties with the AES countries.
Algeria and Mali subsequently restored diplomatic relations and reopened their airspace in July 2026, coinciding with Russia’s continued expansion of military cooperation with the AES.
Algiers itself has longstanding defence ties with Moscow. Russia accounted for about 48 percent of Algeria’s arms imports between 2020 and 2024, giving Algeria access to advanced Russian military equipment.
Among the systems associated with Algeria’s defence relationship with Russia are sophisticated air-defence platforms and the Su-57E fighter, making Algeria the first African country publicly known to operate the fifth-generation aircraft.
A changing security landscape
The renewed Algeria-Niger defence partnership comes amid a wider transformation of military alliances around the world.
Countries are increasingly strengthening strategic partnerships as geopolitical competition intensifies. Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey have deepened their defence cooperation, while Egypt has also been linked to emerging regional security arrangements.
Elsewhere, the United States, Israel and Morocco continue to strengthen security ties, while China and North Korea maintain close strategic and military relations.
In Africa, the AES has developed its own collective security framework while deepening military cooperation with Russia.
For Algeria, closer relations with Niger and improving ties with Mali could provide a way to expand its influence in the Sahel while strengthening its role as a major regional security power.
The helicopter donation therefore goes beyond the transfer of military equipment. It highlights Algeria’s renewed engagement with its southern neighbours and the broader realignment of security partnerships taking place across the African continent.
