Members of Nigeria’s National Assembly have embarked on another break, just one day after returning from a 68-day annual recess.
The lawmakers resumed plenary on Tuesday, September 29, after the annual recess, which began on July 23 following the conclusion of legislative proceedings.
The chambers had initially been scheduled to resume earlier but extended the recess to allow ongoing rehabilitation work, including repairs to facilities in the Senate and House of Representatives chambers.
Following their return, both chambers adjourned plenary until October 13.
In the Senate, the fresh adjournment followed discussions on Nigeria’s security situation. The Senate is expected to resume after its planned National Security Summit, which will bring together lawmakers, security chiefs, security agencies and other stakeholders to discuss intelligence and territorial security.
The House of Representatives also adjourned after considering key fiscal matters, including an extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 budget.
The latest decision means federal lawmakers will spend another two weeks away from plenary before returning on October 13 for further legislative activities and committee assignments.
