TINUBU SIGNS 2025 BUDGET AMENDMENT BILL, EXTENDS IMPLEMENTATION TO DECEMBER 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the Appropriation (Amendment) (No. 4) Bill, 2025, into law, extending the implementation period of the 2025 budget from September 30, 2026, to December 31, 2026.

The President’s assent followed the passage of the amendment by the Senate and the House of Representatives on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

The extension gives ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) additional time to complete ongoing capital projects and fully utilise funds that have already been appropriated.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the measure is intended to ensure that critical government programmes and ongoing projects are not disrupted.

“The extension gives Ministries, Departments and Agencies more time to complete ongoing capital projects,” the statement said. “It ensures that funds already appropriated are fully put to work for Nigerians, without disrupting critical programmes.”

Tinubu commended the leadership and members of the National Assembly for their prompt consideration and passage of the amendment.

The President described the development as a further indication of cooperation between the Executive and Legislative arms of government in the interest of the country.

The extension applies to the capital component of the 2025 budget and moves its implementation deadline to December 31, 2026. It is the fourth extension of the implementation period, following previous extensions to March 31, June 30 and September 30, 2026.

Lawmakers said the latest extension would provide additional time for the completion of funded capital projects, support contractors and facilitate the effective utilisation of funds already released.

The amendment does not introduce new projects but provides additional time for the implementation of existing capital allocations under the 2025 budget framework.

The development means that the Federal Government will continue implementing the capital component of the 2025 budget alongside the 2026 budget until the end of December 2026.
