Kesavan Shanmugam, a Vice President of Engineering at Microsoft, has retired after 23 years with the technology giant, choosing to devote more time to his ageing parents in India.

Shanmugam announced his retirement in a LinkedIn post, explaining that although leaving his role and colleagues was a difficult decision, prioritising his family had become the right choice for him.
His departure comes at a significant time for Microsoft, as the company continues to expand its artificial intelligence capabilities. Shanmugam had been involved in developing Excel Copilot and agentic artificial intelligence systems, technologies designed to make software more capable of assisting users with complex tasks.
A DIFFICULT DECISION AFTER MORE THAN TWO DECADES
Reflecting on his long career, Shanmugam explained that leaving Microsoft was not easy, particularly because he enjoyed his work and valued the people he had worked alongside.

He said his retirement would allow him to focus more of his time and energy on family and friends. He also expressed gratitude to Microsoft for making the decision possible and acknowledged the contributions of colleagues who had made his professional journey rewarding.
His message highlighted the personal considerations that can accompany a successful career, particularly when family responsibilities become more pressing.
SOCIAL MEDIA USERS PRAISE HIS CHOICE
Shanmugam’s announcement attracted considerable attention on LinkedIn, with many users expressing support for his decision to put his parents and family first.
Some commentators praised him for recognising the importance of spending time with ageing parents while the opportunity remained. Others shared personal experiences of losing loved ones, emphasising that professional achievements cannot replace time spent with family.

The reactions reflected a wider discussion about balancing career ambitions with personal relationships and family responsibilities.
HIS RETIREMENT COMES DURING MICROSOFT’S AI EXPANSION
Microsoft continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence, integrating Copilot tools into products such as Excel and other applications used by individuals and businesses.
Shanmugam’s work on Excel Copilot and agentic AI initiatives placed him within an important area of the company’s technological development. Nevertheless, he made clear that leaving behind exciting projects and valued colleagues was a worthwhile sacrifice for the time he hopes to spend with his family.
He did not present his retirement as a rejection of his career, but rather as a personal decision about how he wants to use his time.

ANOTHER INDIAN-ORIGIN TECHNOLOGY LEADER MOVES CLOSER TO FAMILY
Shanmugam’s decision follows a similar move by Balaji Gururajan, a former engineering leader at Meta, who reportedly relocated from the United States to Bengaluru after 18 years abroad to be closer to his ageing parents.
Gururajan’s decision also drew attention to the challenges faced by professionals who build careers far from their families. For many people working overseas, the distance can become increasingly difficult as parents grow older and require more companionship or support.
Although each person’s circumstances differ, these decisions illustrate how family considerations can influence even the most established careers.
Shanmugam’s retirement offers a reminder that professional success and personal fulfilment do not always follow the same path. After more than two decades at one of the world’s leading technology companies, he has chosen to devote his next chapter to the people closest to him.
