HIGH COST OF LIVING IN CANADA: NIGERIAN FAMILY CONSIDERS RETURNING HOME AFTER FATHER STRUGGLES TO FEED FAMILY

A Nigerian family living in Canada is reportedly considering returning to Nigeria after struggling to cope with the country’s rising cost of living, despite relocating abroad in search of better opportunities.

The family’s situation was made public by an X user, identified as Eric St-Pierre, who claimed to work with the Nigerian man at the centre of the story.

According to the social media user, the man relocated to Canada with his wife and children, hoping to provide them with a better standard of living and improved opportunities.

However, the reality of living in the North American country reportedly became more difficult than expected, as his earnings were barely sufficient to cover the family’s rent and other essential expenses.

The account further revealed that the Nigerian man had to go without food on several occasions to ensure that his wife and children had enough to eat.

The financial difficulties have also reportedly forced his wife to consider seeking employment to support the household, rather than concentrating solely on raising their children.

St-Pierre claimed that the experience had left both parents frustrated and regretting their decision to relocate, particularly as their financial situation has not improved as anticipated.

Returning to Nigeria, however, may prove difficult for the family, as they reportedly exhausted a significant portion of their life savings to relocate and establish themselves in Canada.

In his post, the X user attributed the family’s difficulties to Canada’s economic conditions, expressing concerns about the country’s housing and rental costs and their impact on newcomers.

He wrote:

“The Canadian economy is getting so bad that even newly landed immigrants are regretting coming here. I work with a Nigerian guy who brought his entire family here for a better life. In this case they found that the grass wasn’t greener on the other side.

“Suddenly he realised that his wage was only enough to cover his rent. Back home, his income was enough to take care of the entire family. He spent his first months here starving so his wife and kids could eat.

“Now his wife needs to work out of necessity instead of focusing on raising their kids.

“Now distraught, both he and his wife are regretting coming here. Worst yet, they can’t afford to return; they spent their life savings to live in Canada.”

The account has reignited conversations about the financial realities of relocating abroad, particularly the challenges immigrants face when adjusting to higher housing, feeding, transportation and childcare costs.

While Canada remains a popular destination for people seeking improved economic opportunities, the reported experience highlights how difficult it can be for newcomers to achieve financial stability when their income is insufficient to support an entire household.
