ADC WON’T BE BLACKMAILED INTO MAKING DECISION ON ZONING, SAYS SPOKESMAN

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it has not taken a final decision on zoning its presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking on a television programme, the party’s spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, said discussions were ongoing but no conclusion had been reached.

“We will not be blackmailed into a premature decision. Zoning is on the table, and we are having strategic conversations, but I am not in a position to reveal those details yet,” he said.

His comments come as political parties begin to shape their strategies ahead of the next general election. The Labour Party has already zoned its presidential ticket to the South, while the All Progressives Congress adopted President Bola Tinubu, also from the South, as its consensus candidate.

Amid speculation that the ADC is being positioned to support a specific aspirant, particularly former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Abdullahi dismissed the claims.

“Anyone who says that doesn’t understand what is happening in the ADC,” he said. “This has nothing to do with Atiku any more than it has to do with Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, or any other aspirant who may contest on our platform.”

He stressed that the party remains open to all candidates and is focused on building a strong opposition ahead of 2027.

Abdullahi also raised concerns about the state of opposition politics in the country, accusing the current administration of weakening rival parties.

According to him, unity among opposition groups is crucial, warning that divisions would only strengthen the ruling party. “For those who believe in protecting democracy, the ADC remains open,” he added.
