The newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Akeem Abimbola Owoade, has clarified rumors suggesting he abandoned the traditional rites required for his enthronement.
Following his receipt of the staff of office and certificate of appointment from Governor Seyi Makinde on January 13, the Alaafin-elect briefly visited Oyo before traveling to Canada. This sparked speculation that he intended to bypass the traditional rituals.
However, Bode Durojaiye, a key representative of the monarch’s media team, dismissed the claims as misleading and emphasized that all necessary traditional rites will be performed as scheduled.
“Kabiyesi’s trip was within the timeframe allowed before his coronation on April 4, 2025,” Durojaiye stated. He explained that Oba Owoade returned to Canada to finalize personal and professional engagements and assured Oyo residents that the monarch would be back in time for the planned rites.
In a related development, Governor Seyi Makinde has officially set April 4, 2025, as the coronation date for Oba Owoade, the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. State Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, confirmed the announcement on Wednesday.
Makinde’s administration continues to support the process to ensure a smooth transition to the new reign.
