The Alaafin-elect of Oyo, Prince Akeem Owoade, is yet to commence the traditional rites required before his official installation as the Alaafin, according to the Head of Oyo Princes, Chief Mukaila Afonja. He assured that the customary rites will begin immediately after the Alaafin-elect returns from Canada.
In a phone interview with Vanguard, Chief Afonja clarified that Prince Owoade has so far only received his certificate of appointment and staff of office from Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and has not undergone the seclusion rites traditionally required of a new Alaafin.
Seclusion and Traditional Rites Await Alaafin’s Return
Chief Afonja explained that upon his return to Nigeria, the Alaafin-elect will enter Ipebi, a seclusion process that serves as a period of spiritual preparation and learning for the monarch. “When he is back in the country, he will enter Ipebi and begin all necessary rites. This process will last nearly 30 days and will include lessons and tutelage as preparation for his coronation in April,” Afonja stated.
Questions About Tradition
Prince Owoade’s trip abroad to finalize his resignation from his previous job in Canada has drawn mixed reactions, with some questioning whether his travel contravenes traditional customs. Addressing these concerns, Afonja noted that the Alaafin-elect’s absence is not a breach of tradition, as the rites have yet to commence.
“When asked if his travel violates tradition, I explained that he has only collected his certificate and staff of office. The rites will begin upon his return,” Afonja said.
Modern Adjustments to Tradition
Another source in Oyo dismissed rumors that Ifa priests and other traditionalists were reluctant to perform the rites for the new monarch. The source highlighted how modernity has influenced certain traditional practices, requiring adjustments.
“In the past, once a king was chosen, he would immediately enter a 21-day seclusion and remain there until all rites were completed. Only afterward would the presentation of the staff of office and coronation take place. However, things have evolved with time,” the source explained.
Background and Reaction
Prince Owoade’s selection as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo was met with both celebration and controversy. After receiving his certificate and staff of office in a ceremony at the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office, he was warmly received by a large crowd in Oyo.
However, the selection process has been criticized by some kingmakers, who claim it was flawed. Through their counsel, Mr. Adekunle Sobaloju (SAN), they urged Governor Makinde to address the matter in court rather than making public accusations about alleged bribery during the process.
The Alaafin-elect is expected to undergo all the traditional rites upon his return, culminating in his coronation in April.
