The Anambra State Government has reached an agreement with traders to begin a phased remodeling of Onitsha Main Market, aimed at enhancing infrastructure and creating a more organized and sustainable trading environment.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo made the announcement on Friday following a meeting with traders from Onitsha Main Market and neighboring markets at the Government House in Awka.

According to the governor, the dialogue led to a mutual understanding to start the revitalization of the market immediately, with the exercise planned in phases to minimize disruption to commercial activities.
Governor Soludo emphasized that leadership sometimes requires making difficult but necessary decisions to secure long-term benefits. He noted that the intervention is part of efforts to bring the market up to global standards.

“The key elements of the emergency intervention include reclaiming market parks, restoring walkways, and constructing public conveniences. Other measures include repainting and colour-coding of shops and trading lines, among others,” he said.
Soludo added that the initiative aligns with his administration’s manifesto to develop planned and sustainable cities, communities, and markets across Anambra State.

Earlier, Onitsha Main Market Chairman Chijioke Okpalugo told the governor that traders had accepted the government’s remodeling proposal. He requested some time for traders to remove goods from areas affected by illegal structures to facilitate the process.
