#Apple Laptop Stolen on Air Peace Flight from Lagos to Abuja: A Wake-Up Call for In-Cabin Security

Headlinenews.news correspondents have confirmed the theft of an Apple MacBook Pro 16 belonging to an expatriate traveling from Lagos to Abuja on Air Peace Flight P4-7120 at 6:00 AM on February 3, 2025.

The expatriate, the Managing Director of a renowned company, lamented that he only realized the laptop was missing when he attempted to use it for a crucial meeting upon arrival in Abuja. The device, along with its charger and data modem, had been safely zipped inside his hand luggage, which was stored in the overhead compartment.

A Growing Security Concern in Nigerian Air Travel

Passengers have no visibility over their belongings when stored above their seats, making it easy for thieves to remove items unnoticed. Experts now advise travelers to place their hand luggage in overhead compartments opposite their seats for better visibility.

It is alarming that theft is now occurring inside aircraft cabins, suggesting that some travelers—including junior staff and artisans who now fly due to road insecurity—may be taking advantage of economic hardship to engage in criminal acts.

Should Airlines Install CCTV Cameras in Cabins?

The growing trend of in-flight theft has sparked urgent calls for CCTV surveillance in aircraft cabins. While international aviation laws do not mandate in-cabin CCTV cameras, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) acknowledges their benefits in enhancing security and preventing unlawful interference.

Similarly, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) do not require airlines to install CCTV in cabins. However, aviation security experts argue that given the demographic factors of Nigerian travelers, CCTV would serve as an effective deterrent against theft.

Calls for Government Action

Simon Reid, spokesperson for Eden & McWhit Global Services, emphasized the need for in-cabin video surveillance, stating that airlines offering this feature would become the preferred choice for security-conscious passengers. He urged the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace to issue a directive requiring airlines to install cabin CCTV for passenger protection.

Such a measure would not only reduce theft but also protect Nigeria’s reputation among foreign investors and business travelers. This incident is particularly concerning as the expatriate victim, instead of attending crucial meetings, is now trying to recover his stolen laptop through Apple Support and law enforcement.

Final Thoughts: A Call for Immediate Action

This incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced in-flight security. If theft inside aircraft cabins is not addressed promptly, criminals may become bolder, and passengers will no longer feel safe—even while taking a short nap.

A recent survey among Nigerian travelers revealed overwhelming support for in-cabin CCTV. It is time for authorities and airlines to act swiftly and restore confidence in air travel security.
