Leading opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, are currently meeting at Transcorp Hilton in Abuja to present their position on contentious provisions of the Electoral Act.

Also in attendance are former Senate President David Mark (ADC National Chairman), former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, ADC National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, Buba Galadima (NNPP chieftain), Senator Dino Melaye, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke, and ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, among others.

The closed-door session is taking place at the Lagos/Osun Hall of Transcorp Hilton. The group is expected to address journalists afterward on key issues in the recently amended Electoral Act 2026, as well as other pressing national matters.

The Electoral Act 2022 previously allowed political parties to nominate candidates through direct primaries (involving all registered members), indirect primaries (via delegates), or consensus arrangements.

However, the 2026 amendments—passed by the National Assembly and assented to by President Bola Tinubu on February 18—restrict parties to only direct primaries and consensus options.

The new law also shortens campaign periods and primary timelines, while changing INEC funding release from 12 months to six months before elections.

The meeting signals growing coordination among opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections, amid concerns over electoral reforms and political space in Nigeria.
Details of their joint position and press briefing are expected shortly.
