Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stated that he is unsure whether he will run for president in 2027.
Atiku, who has contested the presidency six times, made this remark in a yet-to-be-aired interview on the television show Untold Stories with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie.
His comments come just days after he announced the formation of a coalition of opposition leaders aiming to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election.
A Viable Platform is Key
When asked about his 2027 plans, Atiku responded:
💬 “I don’t know because there has to be, first of all, a viable platform, more than any other time in the political history of this country, particularly since the return of democracy.”
However, he did not rule out the possibility of contesting, emphasizing that Nigeria urgently needs competent leadership.
💬 “I have not seen Nigeria in more dire need of experienced and credible leadership than this time.”
He referenced the 2014 political merger that led to the victory of the opposition at the time, hinting at a possible repeat of such an alliance.
Speculations on 2027 Alignments
There are growing speculations that Atiku may back either Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, or Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, in the 2027 election.
His role in the opposition’s restructuring efforts will likely shape the political landscape ahead of the next presidential race.
