#Biafra: Tinubu Fails to Honor Agreement on Nnamdi Kanu’s Release – IPOB Leader’s Family

The family of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has alleged that President Bola Tinubu has not honored a pre-election agreement for Kanu’s release.

Kanunta Kanu, the IPOB leader’s brother, revealed that the agreement was brokered during a meeting with Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu, before the 2023 presidential election. According to Kanunta, the meeting, reportedly endorsed by President Tinubu, resulted in a pact that Kanu would be released if Tinubu won the election.

In a statement, Kanunta disclosed that the agreement was made in good faith, with the understanding that IPOB would not disrupt or boycott the 2023 elections.

Key Details from Kanunta’s Statement:

  • The Meeting: Kanunta recounted meeting Seyi Tinubu in Abuja, accompanied by a witness to verify the discussions. He stated that Seyi affirmed his father’s approval of the meeting and promised that the agreement would be binding on then-candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
  • Commitment to Non-Interference: Kanunta communicated the agreement to Nnamdi Kanu, who reaffirmed IPOB’s long-standing policy of not interfering with elections.
  • Public Reassurance: During a campaign visit to Owerri, Tinubu allegedly reiterated his commitment to facilitating Kanu’s release if elected president.

Despite these assurances, Kanunta expressed frustration that nearly two years into Tinubu’s presidency, Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention without charges.

Kanunta also highlighted judicial delays, noting that since Justice Binta Nyako recused herself from the case over three months ago, no new judge has been assigned.

The family called for urgent action to resolve the matter and fulfill the agreement, emphasizing the prolonged detention’s impact on justice and trust.
