Bisi Akande, former interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has claimed that the #EndSARS movement was designed by the Obidients movement against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Akande, also a former governor of Osun state stated this while speaking on State Affairs, a podcast anchored by a popular broadcaster and journalist, Edmund Obilo.
He explained that the Obidients — a movement that supported the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi — designed the protest from America.
Recall that Nigerians trooped to the streets and major cities for days, across the country in 2020, protesting against brutality by the Special Anti-Robbery Squads (SARS) — a unit in the Nigeria Police — and called for the reform of the Nigeria Police Force.
The protest culminated at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, where several youths were reportedly killed and many others severely injured following the intervention of the Nigerian military.
However, according to the former governor, a lot of money was pumped into the protest from America, aimed at ending Tinubu, who was then a national leader of the ruling APC.
He specifically stated that the obedient movement were the ones behind the #EndSARS movement and protest, adding that it was after the protest they attempted to become a political party and when that couldn’t be done, they joined themselves to another party.
“EndSARS was designed to be the end of Tinubu. Those behind the EndSARS knew that’s what they were doing,” Akande declared during the interview.
Asked by the interviewer to identify those behind the EndSARS movement, Akande replied, “The obidients.”
“The Obidients were behind EndSARS; it was manufactured in America and brought in just to stop him (Tinubu).
“Obideints came from America to do the EndSARS and later became a movement to form a party, and they couldn’t form a party and joined whichever party,” the APC chieftain said.
Pushing further, the interviewer noted that Obidients are tied to Peter Obi and Akande, in response said: “Well, maybe Obi’s party, I don’t know, maybe Obi’s movement, I don’t know, but the obidients were behind the EndSARS.
“It was well planned with a lot of money from America.”
He added that it was an ambush that President Tinubu wasn’t aware of.
Chief Bisi Akande has accused Peter Obi’s supporters of undermining President Tinubu’s administration. He linked them to the End SARS protests, alleging they were orchestrated to discredit Tinubu ahead of the presidential election. According to Akande, their efforts extended beyond Nigeria to the UK and USA in a sustained campaign against Tinubu.
