Seven military personnel, including a recently promoted Lieutenant Colonel, were killed in a deadly ambush by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State.
According to reports, Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed was leading a contingent of soldiers from Maiduguri to Damasak in Mobbar Local Government Area when they were attacked by the terrorists on Monday, January 26, 2026. The assailants reportedly used explosives and heavy gunfire during the assault.

Military sources confirmed that several soldiers sustained serious injuries, while an undetermined number of troops remain missing.
A source said, “On January 26, 2026, troops en route from Maiduguri to Damasak in Mobbar Local Government Area were ambushed, resulting in the death of seven soldiers, including a newly promoted Lieutenant Colonel. The Commander had mobilized his team for surveillance due to intelligence about terrorist activity in the area, but they were caught in an ambush.”

The bodies of the fallen soldiers have been taken to the 7 Division Hospital. The source added that the terrorists also seized the late commander’s mobile phone, which was later picked up by Boko Haram operatives when senior officers attempted to call it.
