BREAKING NEWS: NLC Defies Late-Night Tinubu Talks, Proceeds With Nationwide Protest in Lagos
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday went ahead with its planned protest in Lagos, despite last-minute efforts by President Bola Tinubu to halt the action through a late-night meeting with labour leaders.

The emergency talks, held on Tuesday night at the State House in Abuja, were led by NLC President Joe Ajaero and brought together key government officials, including the Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma; Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo; Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris; and the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.

Following the closed-door meeting, Ajaero declined to give a definite answer when asked whether the protest would still take place. He stressed that decisions within the labour movement are collective rather than personal.

“This is not an organisation run by one individual,” Ajaero said. “We will return to consult, review everything the President discussed with us, and then decide the way forward.”

Despite the dialogue, labour unions proceeded with demonstrations, citing worsening insecurity across the country. In recent weeks, attacks by bandits and terrorists on communities, churches, and schools have intensified, prompting President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on security.

As the protest unfolds, Nigerians remain divided on whether the action will lead to meaningful change.
