The Federal Government of Nigeria has fulfilled its pledge to the family of Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the late designer of the Nigerian national flag, by donating N30 million as a gesture of appreciation for his contributions to the country.
The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, presented the cheque to Akinkunmi’s family at their Ibadan residence on Thursday. He was accompanied by the Oyo State NOA Director, Olukemi Afolayan.
Government’s Commitment Fulfilled
The donation follows a government delegation’s condolence visit on September 4, 2023, led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Malagi. During the visit, the government had promised a national burial and financial assistance for the family.
Speaking at the presentation, NOA DG Issa-Onilu emphasized that the donation was not a payment for Akinkunmi’s services but a symbolic appreciation of his legacy.
Family Expresses Gratitude
Receiving the cheque on behalf of the family, Akinwunmi Akinkunmi, one of the late icon’s sons, expressed deep gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for honoring his father’s memory.
A Lasting Legacy
Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, born on May 10, 1936, in Ibadan, Oyo State, made history in 1958 when his green-white-green flag design was chosen as Nigeria’s national symbol. He was awarded £100 for his design, which became a defining emblem of the nation’s independence in 1960.
His contributions to national identity remain a source of pride for Nigeria, and this financial support serves as a recognition of his lasting impact.
