Retired Lieutenant-General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and prominent Nigerian military figure, has passed away at the age of 81. He died on Thursday, January 23, 2025, after a protracted illness.
Born on February 16, 1943, in Langtang, Plateau State, Useni had a distinguished military and political career. He served as the Military Governor of the defunct Bendel State from January 1984 to August 1985 and was the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under General Sani Abacha’s regime from 1993 to 1998. He also represented Plateau South Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate between 2015 and 2019.
His death was confirmed by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who described it as a tremendous loss to the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the nation.
President Bola Tinubu also expressed his condolences, acknowledging Useni’s service to the nation.
The late General Useni is remembered for his significant contributions to Nigeria’s military and political spheres. Funeral arrangements will be announced by his family in due course.
