The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, affectionately known as “Ijaya,” has passed away. Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, died on January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.
This was confirmed in a statement by the House Spokesperson, Rep. Akin Rotimi, who described Onanuga as a dedicated public servant, visionary leader, and passionate advocate for her constituents.
A Legacy of Service
Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga began her political career in 2019, elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). During her first term, she served as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, where she championed initiatives to empower women and enhance social welfare.
Re-elected in 2023, she assumed the role of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly, where she demonstrated exemplary leadership and an unwavering commitment to legislative discipline. Her dedication and passion for public service earned her admiration from both colleagues and constituents.

In the statement, Rotimi praised Onanuga’s impactful contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape.

Her life was devoted to creating a better society and improving the lives of Nigerians, particularly those in her constituency,” he said.
