A devastating fire outbreak occurred on Tuesday at an MRS filling station along Numan Road, near Yola International Airport, following the explosion of two petrol-laden tankers.
The incident, which reportedly resulted in multiple casualties, caused significant disruption as the major road leading to Yola, the Adamawa State capital, was blocked. Witnesses say the explosion occurred while a tanker was offloading fuel, triggering a massive inferno.
Firefighters from the Adamawa State Fire Service, Federal Fire Service, and the American University of Nigeria (AUN) are currently battling to contain the blaze, which has already consumed several vehicles.
Residents rushed to the scene despite the high risk, raising concerns about safety and the potential spread of the fire, especially as the area houses more than 10 filling stations.
“We heard a loud bang, and within seconds, the filling station was engulfed in flames,” an eyewitness recounted.
Authorities are yet to confirm the exact number of casualties, but the scale of destruction is reportedly severe. Emergency responders are on-site, working to prevent further damage.
