BREAKING: TURAKI-LED PDP NWC IN CLOSED-DOOR MEETING WITH JONATHAN IN ABUJA

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has held a private meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan to deliberate on internal party matters and broader national concerns.

According to The PUNCH, Turaki arrived at Jonathan’s office in Maitama, Abuja, on Tuesday evening around 5:45 pm, accompanied by members of the NWC and a number of selected state party chairmen. The delegation reportedly travelled in a convoy of six sport utility vehicles.

Party sources said discussions focused on the lingering internal crisis within the PDP, strategies aimed at repositioning the party, and other pressing national issues.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Turaki expressed appreciation to the former president for his guidance and continued commitment to the party. He explained that the visit was intended to formally introduce the newly elected NWC members to Jonathan and brief him on the committee’s activities since assuming office.

Turaki revealed that Jonathan offered words of encouragement and reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, assuring the delegation that he remains an active, card-carrying member who is prepared to deepen his involvement in the party’s affairs.

He noted that Jonathan’s reassurance was timely and motivating as the party prepares for upcoming off-season elections, including the Ekiti governorship contest, as well as the 2027 general elections.

While acknowledging the legal disputes confronting the party, Turaki said they would not derail efforts to rebuild the PDP into a strong opposition force. He added that Jonathan shares the belief that the PDP remains the preferred political platform for many Nigerians.

Turaki maintained that the party followed all legal procedures during its primaries, which were monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ekiti and Osun states. However, he expressed concern over what he described as recent actions by INEC that could raise questions about the commission’s independence.

On reconciliation within the party, Turaki said unity remains a priority once legal issues are resolved, stressing that not all political disagreements should be settled in court. He assured that aggrieved members would be welcomed back if they show genuine commitment to rebuilding the party.

Although he declined to reveal details of Jonathan’s advice, Turaki confirmed that the former president’s input would play a significant role in shaping the PDP’s strategy going forward.
