The Deputy Head of Mission of the British High Commission to Nigeria on Monday visited world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua in hospital following a fatal road traffic accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, an incident that has attracted widespread national and international attention.

The visit was confirmed in an official statement issued by Mr. Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun. According to the statement, the British High Commission was formally notified of the accident and has remained in close contact with Nigerian authorities and the medical team attending to the boxer.

During the visit, the British envoy met with Anthony Joshua and held discussions with Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, as British officials continue to monitor developments surrounding the tragic incident. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was fully briefed on the accident and personally reached out to express his sympathy and condolences. According to the Ogun State Government, the President held separate telephone conversations with Anthony Joshua, his mother, and Governor Abiodun.

Describing the incident as a moment of collective national sorrow, President Tinubu said the tragedy had cast a deep shadow over the festive season and urged Nigerians to remain united and supportive.

“This immense tragedy has cast a deep shadow over this season. These are very difficult moments, and we must stand firm, united, and encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny,” the President said.

 

The President also offered prayers and words of comfort to Joshua and his family, emphasising that Nigerians stand with him during this painful period.

The accident occurred around midday on Monday and involved a Toyota Lexus SUV conveying Anthony Joshua and three other occupants. Authorities confirmed that two passengers lost their lives in the crash.

The deceased were identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu, a 36-year-old Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina, a 36-year-old British citizen.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) earlier issued a preliminary report confirming that overspeeding and dangerous overtaking were contributing factors. A full investigation has been ordered, with authorities assuring that findings will be made public upon completion.

Governors take charge at the hospital.

Following the accident, Governor Dapo Abiodun immediately visited the Lagos hospital where Joshua was receiving treatment and was later joined by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Both governors reportedly remained at the hospital for several hours to ensure that the boxer received appropriate medical care.

“As soon as I was informed, I headed straight to the hospital and was later joined by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. We both took charge of the situation, oversaw Anthony Joshua’s care, and remained at the hospital for over seven hours,” Abiodun said.

Also present were the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, underscoring the gravity of the incident and Joshua’s importance to Nigeria’s sporting history.

The Ogun State Government confirmed that Anthony Joshua remained in stable condition and expressed satisfaction with the quality of care provided by the medical team.
