Former President Muhammadu Buhari has asserted that Nigeria’s economy and security witnessed significant progress during his eight-year tenure compared to when he assumed office in 2015.
Speaking in Daura, Katsina State, while receiving members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents’ Chapel, Buhari stated that his administration worked diligently to stabilize the economy and enhance national security.
“Compared to what we met in 2015, Nigeria’s security and economy improved significantly under my administration. Things will continue to improve in Nigeria,” he said.
Challenges of Leadership and Personal Reflections
The former president acknowledged the difficulties of governance, emphasizing that only those who have occupied leadership positions can fully grasp the challenges involved.
Reflecting on aging and well-being, Buhari noted that many of his former classmates have passed away, while some of the surviving ones require assistance to move around. He expressed gratitude for his good health, attributing it to his military background and disciplined lifestyle.
“People who see me now say I look better than I did while I was in office. I am still strong enough to go about my daily activities,” he remarked.
Achievements and Governance Reflections
Buhari highlighted security and the economy as the two sectors that received the most attention under his leadership. While admitting that Nigeria is not an easy country to govern, he maintained that his administration recorded key achievements during its time in power.
He also disclosed that he built his Daura home long before heading the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) and that his Kaduna residence remained unpainted for years until it was later renovated.
Expressing appreciation to journalists, Buhari commended the media coverage his administration received during his presidency.
