CAMEROON’S 93-YEAR-OLD PRESIDENT PAUL BIYA APPOINTS SON AS VICE-PRESIDENT, HEAD OF ARMED FORCES

Cameroon’s President, Paul Biya, has appointed his son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, as Vice President of the country and Head of the Armed Forces, placing him at the centre of both political and military leadership.

The appointment was confirmed in an official decree dated April 4, 2026. In addition to his new roles, Franck Biya was also named Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Defence, further strengthening his influence within Cameroon’s security structure.

According to the presidency, the decision was made in line with constitutional provisions and based on what it described as “service requirements.”

The move comes just months after Biya, now 93, was sworn in for an eighth term in office following a controversial election. He reportedly secured 54 per cent of the vote, defeating opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who garnered 35 per cent.

Bakary rejected the outcome, alleging electoral fraud and insisting he was the rightful winner, though the government denied the claims. The election sparked protests across the country and drew international attention over concerns about Cameroon’s democratic process.

Despite the backlash, Biya described the election as satisfactory and commended the electoral body, while also praising security forces for maintaining order during the unrest.

The Constitutional Council later dismissed petitions challenging the results, citing lack of evidence or jurisdiction.

Biya, who has been in power since 1982 after succeeding former president Ahmadou Ahidjo, remains one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. His decision to elevate his son to key positions is likely to intensify criticism from those who believe power is increasingly being concentrated within his family.
