Chidi Anyaegbu, Chairman and CEO of Chisco Transport Nig. Ltd, has declined an offer to be named Mayor of Ndigbo. The title was to be conferred on him by the United Igbo Elders Council Worldwide (UNIEC) as part of his induction as the council’s National Life Patron.
In an official statement released on Friday, Anyaegbu expressed gratitude for the honor but stated that he had chosen to step back after careful reflection. He explained that the politically charged nature of the position was not aligned with his personal mission of fostering peace, collaboration, and unity.
“I deeply appreciate being considered for such a significant title,” Anyaegbu said. “However, recent developments have revealed the political undertones of this position, which do not align with my goals. My respect for Ndigbo and the unity of Nigeria remains unwavering, and I will continue to support these ideals in other ways.”
Anyaegbu apologized for any inconvenience caused by his decision, particularly to those who had made travel arrangements for the event. He extended appreciation to the planning committee, led by Chief Tony Obianuju and supported by Chief Solomon, for their dedication to organizing the occasion.
UNIEC, an offshoot of the Alaigbo Achievers Legacy, is a socio-cultural organization focused on preserving Igbo identity, traditions, and cultural heritage while promoting economic investment and development in the Igbo homeland.
Despite Anyaegbu’s gratitude, the planned event and conferment were marred by controversy. The Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Achebe, who was listed as a royal father for the event, publicly distanced himself from the occasion. Achebe clarified that he was never approached for the role and did not consent to participate.
Similarly, Damian Okeke-Ogene, National Vice President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, also dissociated the group from the event, stating that the Lagos State Branch of Ohanaeze had already announced they were not involved.
Many Igbo stakeholders questioned the rationale behind conferring the Mayor of Ndigbo title on Anyaegbu, adding to the controversy surrounding the event. Observers believe this backlash may have influenced Anyaegbu’s decision to decline the honor.
