Controversy Erupts as New Alaafin Abandons Traditional Duties, Heads Back To Canada

New Alaafin Yet to Commence Traditional Rites, Remains in Canada

The new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, has yet to begin the month-long traditional rites leading up to his coronation, ten days after receiving the staff of office and certificate of appointment from Governor Seyi Makinde.

Governor Makinde presented the staff of office to Owoade on January 13, 2024, at the Oyo State Governor’s Office in Ibadan. He announced that the coronation would take place within four weeks.

Following the presentation, Owoade traveled to Oyo town where he was welcomed by residents. He also visited his family home.

However, contrary to expectations, Owoade departed for Canada the following day.

Sources indicate that Owoade needed to return to Canada to resign from his previous positions and complete necessary paperwork.

“He is still in Canada. He has to resign from his workplaces in Canada and finalize all those papers before returning to Oyo,” a source told The HEADLINENEWS.

Owoade is a Nigerian-Canadian entrepreneur, philanthropist, and President of 100279 Manitoba Limited, a real estate investment and financial services company in Manitoba, Canada. He also serves as Project Coordinator at Manitoba Hydro, a major Canadian utility provider.

As of Wednesday, individuals and groups involved in the traditional rites confirmed that Owoade had not yet commenced them.

“He is yet to commence the traditional rites. We believe he is still preparing himself and getting ready. The process is lengthy, involving numerous sacrifices and rituals. It is non-stop, once he starts, he has to visit many places, so he has to be ready,” one source stated.

The traditional rites, including the Ipebi (seclusion) ritual, involve various individuals and groups, including the Oluawo (Ifa priest), the Oyo Mesi, and priests and priestesses.

The Ipebi ritual involves numerous individuals and groups playing key roles in ensuring the spiritual well-being and authority of the Alaafin.

Other traditional rites include visits to the Baba Iyaji residence, Ona Isokun, Ilemole, and Bara, followed by the crowning ceremony in the Koso chamber.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, announced on Wednesday that April 4th had been approved as the coronation date for the new Alaafin.
