Cooking Gas Prices Drop 21% in August, Bringing Relief to Households.

The average cost to refill a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas has fallen sharply by 21.42% month-on-month to ₦16,195.07 in August 2025, down from ₦20,609.48 in July, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). On a year-on-year basis, though, prices edged up 4.13% from ₦15,552.56 in August 2024.

Yobe State topped the list at ₦16,887.42, followed by Adamawa (₦16,872.40) and Ebonyi (₦16,859.17). Benue had the lowest at ₦15,102.50, with Borno (₦15,176.39) and Imo (₦15,177.58) close behind. By zone, the North-West averaged ₦16,358.15—the highest—while the South-West came in lowest at ₦15,865.17.

For a 5kg cylinder, prices plunged 22.32% month-on-month to ₦6,404.02 from ₦8,243.79, but dipped just 0.40% year-on-year from ₦6,430.02. Katsina led at ₦6,945.21, with Taraba (₦6,893.12) and Rivers (₦6,886.49) next. Delta was cheapest at ₦5,657.50, trailed by Bauchi (₦5,721.75) and Borno (₦6,070.56).

The drop offers some breathing room for families amid rising living costs, though experts tie it to global oil trends and local supply tweaks. Still, year-on-year gains highlight ongoing pressures from forex swings and import reliance.
