#Court Grants Yahaya Bello N500m Bail in Fresh N110.4bn Fraud Case

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama has granted former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, bail in the sum of N500 million in an ongoing case of alleged N110.4 billion fraud.

The bail was approved on Thursday, December 19, 2024, by Justice Maryann E. Anenih, who also imposed strict conditions. Bello is required to provide three sureties, each owning landed properties in high-value areas of Abuja. Additionally, he must surrender his international travel documents and seek permission before leaving the country.

This development follows a previous rejection of Bello’s bail application on December 10, 2024, which the court deemed “premature” as it was filed before his arraignment.

Background of the Case

Yahaya Bello, who served as Kogi State Governor from 2016 to 2024, is standing trial alongside two former state officials, Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, over a 16-count charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges include conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, and possession of unlawfully acquired property.

Allegations by EFCC

The EFCC accuses Bello and his co-defendants of embezzling state funds to acquire various properties, including:

  • No. 35 Danube Street, Maitama District, Abuja (N950 million)
  • No. 1160 Cadastral Zone C03, Gwarimpa II District, Abuja (N100 million)
  • No. 2 Justice Chukwudifu Oputa Street, Asokoro, Abuja (N920 million)

Additional assets allegedly acquired with stolen funds include properties in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, a luxury hotel apartment in Dubai, and significant sums transferred to TD Bank, USA.

The EFCC also alleges the misappropriation of N677.8 million from Bespoque Business Solution Limited and other illicit financial transactions linked to the defendants.

Previous Bail and Related Charges

In a separate but related case, the Federal High Court in Abuja earlier granted Bello bail of N500 million with two sureties over another 19-count charge involving an alleged N80.2 billion fraud.

Bello’s current bail conditions mark the second time he has been granted temporary reprieve in ongoing corruption trials that have garnered national attention.
