#Court Orders INEC to Pay N1.12 Billion Compensation Over Businessman’s Death in Road Crash

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to pay N1.12 billion in compensation to the family of businessman Mike Madu, who was killed in a road accident caused by an INEC official vehicle in Kogi State.

Delivering judgment on Friday, Justice Inyang Ekwo ruled that INEC must also pay 10% interest per annum on the sum until full payment is made. Additionally, the court directed INEC, its Chairman, Prof. Yakubu Mahmood, and other defendants to send a formal letter of condolence to Madu’s family.

The lawsuit, filed by Augustine Madu on behalf of the Umudurugwu, Umuokwe, Awo-Omamma community in Imo State, named INEC, its Chairman, the INEC Commissioner in Abuja, and INEC driver Hassan Abdul as defendants.

According to court documents, the fatal crash occurred on June 16, 2019, when Abdul, driving a Toyota V8 Land Cruiser with a police escort, lost control on the Itobe-Anyigba Expressway in Kogi State. The vehicle veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a Lexus carrying Madu and two Chinese investors. The crash resulted in Madu’s death, along with one of the investors, Huang Hia Yan.

Madu, a successful businessman who frequently traveled between Nigeria and China for trade partnerships, was on a business trip to Enugu State’s Free Trade Zone at the time of the accident. Following his tragic death, his family pursued legal action, seeking justice and compensation for his untimely loss.

Justice Ekwo, in his ruling, also mandated the defendants to cover the legal costs of the case, emphasizing that the judgment must be fully complied with.
