Breaking: Dangote Refinery sacks Nigerian workers 24 hours after joining PENGASSAN

The management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has terminated the employment of all its Nigerian workers, less than 24 hours after the majority of them joined the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

Political commentator, Imran Wakili, disclosed the development in a post on X on Wednesday. According to him, “Dangote Refinery has officially laid off all of its Nigerian workers under the guise of ‘reorganization,’ less than 24 hours after 90% of them joined PENGASSAN.”

A memo dated September 25, 2025, and signed by the Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management, Femi Adekunle, confirmed the action. The document cited a “total re-organisation” of the plant following alleged sabotage in different units of the refinery.

The notice directed affected staff to return all company property to their line managers and secure exit clearance. It also instructed the finance department to compute benefits and entitlements for settlement in line with the terms of employment. The refinery’s management expressed appreciation to the disengaged workers for their service.

Reacting, PENGASSAN President and Trade Union Congress leader, Festus Osifo, confirmed the mass sack in an interview with Daily Post.

“Yes, it is true. We saw the letter late last night. I can assure you that they will recall all of them,” he said.

As of press time, the management of Dangote Refinery had yet to issue an official response.
