DEATH TOLL FROM MAIDUGURI BLAST HITS 28 AS GOV ZULUM VISITS VICTIMS

Borno State governor, Prof Babagana Zulum, on Thursday night visited victims of Monday evening’s triple suicide bombings in Maiduguri to offer comfort and support.

The governor toured the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) and the State Specialist Hospital, where victims were receiving medical care. He described the attacks as a tragic event unlikely to happen again and reassured residents that the worst of the crisis is over.

The bombings took place simultaneously at the Monday Market, the Post Office area, and the entrance of UMTH, initially claiming about 25 lives. By the time of Governor Zulum’s visit, the death toll had risen to 28.

Speaking on the incident, Zulum, who was performing Lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia when the attacks occurred, assured that Borno State will not revert to past times of terrorist control.

“I sympathize with the families who lost their loved ones and assure them that the government will support them. The state government will cover all medical costs for those receiving treatment. May God grant eternal rest to those who died,” he said.

He also commended Vice President Kashim Shettima and the service chiefs for visiting the victims, describing their actions as a demonstration of responsible leadership.

Governor Zulum added that the federal government, under President Bola Tinubu, recently released significant funds to the Nigerian military, particularly the Multi-National Joint Taskforce (MNJTF), for operations around Lake Chad to address ongoing insecurity in the Northeast.

At the UMTH Trauma Centre, Dr Bukar Bunu, head of medical operations, revealed the hospital received 110 patients from the blasts. Among them, 22 were dead on arrival and six later succumbed to their injuries. The hospital admitted 82 patients, successfully discharged 32, and currently has 50 individuals under treatment.
