The ThinkYorubaFirst page put out a post claiming the first mosque in Lagos was built by Mohammed Shitta-Bey in 1894, and then questioned Muslims being under Sultan of Sokoto based on that legacy.
Firstly, it is totally false, that the pioneer mosque in Lagos was built in 1894. It wipes out a whole century of Muslim presence.
The first mosque in Lagos is the Idoluwo Mosque built in 1774 (Mosalasi Idoluwo).
The Enu-Owa mosque was built in 1787.
Sunmonu Asunmo Animashaun had given land for a mosque in Olowogbowo around 1841 for Jummah Service.
Islam had become so entrenched in Lagos that when Oba Kosoko went into exile with his supporters like Sunmonu Animashaun, Alfa Salu Gana in 1853, Islam spread widely in Epe, giving the appellation ” Epe loni Kurani” “(Epe owns the Quran).
By the 1840’s and 1850’s several “Aguda” (Brazilian ex-slave) who were Muslim Yorubas before their capture or converted in Brazil (particularly after the Male Rebellion of 1835 in Brazil) purchased their freedom and migrated back to their homeland settling in Lagos.
Prominent among them were the Pedros, Tiamiyu Gomez,Martins,Agusto,Yahaya Tokunboh,Da Silva and Salvadar on Bamgboye Street.
Saliu Salvador Ramos Des Nevas founded the Salvador Mosque in Bamgbose Street was built in 1848.
Even the Tairu-Eko mosque was built in 1882.
Mohammed Shitta-Bey belonged to the group of Aku Muslims (from Sierra-Leone) who also returned to Lagos in 1840’s and 1850’s and joined the burgeoning Muslim community so much so, by 1871, Muslims were 44 percent of the native African Population in Lagos.
His mosque construction began in 1891 and was finished by 1894 using a classic Brazilian style that attracted global attention and was commissioned by a representative of the Ottoman Sultan, Abdullah Quilliam, earning him the Ottoman title Bey.
With regards to Sultan of Sokoto being the Permanent Leader of Nigerian Muslims, the ThinkYorubaFirst can as well focus on its propagation of Isese which it champions and leave the Muslims to focus on their matters.
If Muslims want to change their order not to make anyone leader of Muslims, they would do it themselves. It would not be through the prodding of Agbebo’s.
That is what Yorubas call Gboranmideleru.
They should focus on their propagation of Idol Worship.
That is their KPI.
