DIPLOMATIC DISPUTE WITH US RESOLVED, FG SAYS

The Federal Government has confirmed that its recent diplomatic tensions with the United States have largely been resolved following continued discussions between both nations.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced this on Monday during a year-end press briefing in Abuja. He explained that the diplomatic strain, which followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s allegations of mass killings of Christians in Nigeria and threats of potential military action, was addressed through constructive dialogue.

According to Idris, Nigeria responded to the situation with calm and principled diplomacy, resulting in an enhanced partnership with the United States.

“The recent diplomatic disagreement with the United States has been mostly settled through firm and respectful engagement, leading to a stronger bilateral relationship,” the minister said.

He highlighted a recently signed health cooperation agreement as a clear sign of improved ties. The minister revealed that Nigeria and the U.S. inked a five-year Memorandum of Understanding worth $5.1 billion to bolster Nigeria’s healthcare system. Under the agreement, the U.S. will provide $2.1 billion in grants, while Nigeria will contribute $3 billion. Idris described the deal as the largest co-investment under the America First Global Health Strategy.

The agreement is expected to enhance healthcare delivery, save lives, and attract further investment into the country. Idris noted that this development demonstrates that earlier fears of a breakdown in Nigeria-U.S. relations were unfounded.

The minister further emphasized that Nigeria is increasingly positioning itself as a confident and strategic partner internationally, protecting national interests while fostering mutually beneficial partnerships.

On diplomatic appointments, Idris stated that Nigeria’s newly designated ambassadors will assume their roles in 2026 following National Assembly approval, a move that will strengthen bilateral relations and enhance Nigeria’s global engagement.

Earlier reports had noted that President Trump had designated Nigeria a ‘country of particular concern’ in response to claims of Christian persecution in the country.
