Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, arrived at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, for his official decoration, formally marking his assumption of office as Nigeria’s new police chief.

Headlinenews.news correspondents at the scene confirmed that Disu entered the Aso Rock complex shortly after 3:00 p.m., ahead of the ceremonial investiture.
His appointment followed the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, whose exit was confirmed by the Presidency on Tuesday.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accepted Egbetokun’s resignation after he submitted a letter citing pressing family considerations requiring his full attention.
A Strategic Appointment.
Disu is not new to high-pressure assignments.
He previously served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, one of Nigeria’s most politically sensitive jurisdictions, and earlier headed the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), where he built a reputation for operational coordination and intelligence-led crime fighting.

Security observers note that his elevation comes at a time when Nigeria faces layered security pressures — from insurgency and banditry to communal tensions and pre-election political sensitivities.
The decoration ceremony symbolises more than rank elevation; it signals continuity of command within the Nigeria Police Force at a delicate national moment.

Expectations Ahead of 2027.
With political alignments gradually forming ahead of the next electoral cycle, analysts stress that the Police leadership will play a pivotal role in maintaining neutrality, professionalism, and public confidence.
Civil society groups have already emphasised the importance of impartial law enforcement, crowd control discipline, and protection of democratic rights during the pre-election environment.

The National Patriots Movement, in a statement issued shortly after the announcement, congratulated Disu on his appointment and urged him to strengthen intelligence coordination, enhance officer accountability, and uphold the constitutional role of the Police as non-partisan guardians of public order.

As the ceremony concludes and formal duties commence, attention will shift from symbolism to substance: how effectively the new Acting IGP navigates security reforms, internal discipline, and operational efficiency in the months ahead.
Headlinenews.news will continue to monitor developments within the Nigeria Police Force under the new leadership.
