An inmate at a correctional facility in Potiskum, Yobe State, has delivered a baby boy after allegedly being impregnated by a prison officer.
The inmate, identified as Blessing Sunday, gave birth on Sunday at the Potiskum Specialist Hospital. Both mother and child are reported to be in stable condition.
According to sources, the incident dates back to November last year, when a correctional officer, Sani Saleh-Bodejo, allegedly assaulted the inmate. He is said to have gained access to the inmates’ quarters late at night, reportedly with the assistance of some female staff members. The officer was also accused of assaulting another inmate.

Following the allegations, the Nigerian Correctional Service confirmed the case and took disciplinary action. Saleh-Bodejo and other officers linked to the incident were suspended, while further investigations were launched to determine the extent of involvement of those accused.
In a statement issued at the time, the service said the affected personnel were sanctioned for unprofessional conduct, with additional queries and charge sheets issued where necessary.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, approved the suspension after reviewing initial findings. Authorities reiterated that the agency maintains a strict zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, abuse of office, and any form of inappropriate relationship between staff and inmates.
They also assured that anyone found guilty would face disciplinary measures and possible legal action in line with established regulations.
