#El-Rufai, Al-Mustapha, Atiku’s Allies and Others Hold ‘Strategic Meeting’ at SDP Secretariat in Abuja Ahead of 2027 Elections

Prominent Nigerian politicians, including former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and former presidential candidate Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, recently met with the leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja to discuss strategies for the upcoming 2027 general elections.

The closed-door meeting has raised eyebrows, sparking speculation about potential political realignments and alliances among opposition figures. In attendance was Otunba Segun Showunmi, former spokesman for People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, further fueling discussions on the possibility of a united opposition front.

Although the exact agenda of the gathering remains undisclosed, it is being viewed as part of broader efforts by opposition leaders to strengthen their positions and present a formidable challenge to President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election. This comes amidst growing tensions within the ruling APC, especially regarding El-Rufai’s stance.

El-Rufai, a former ally of President Tinubu, has been critical of the president’s leadership, particularly following his exclusion from the ministerial list last year after the Senate withheld his confirmation. His participation in a high-level meeting with opposition figures has intensified speculation about a possible shift in his political affiliation.

The meeting, described as a “strategic gathering,” was organized by SDP Chairman Shehu Gabam. Showunmi, who confirmed the event in a Facebook post, emphasized its significance in evaluating the state of opposition politics in Nigeria.

This strategic move comes just days after El-Rufai denied rumors that he was planning to defect from the APC to join an opposition party. He urged Nigerians to disregard the claims, stating that he had referred those spreading the rumors to his lawyers.

Despite these denials, El-Rufai’s engagement in opposition discussions has fueled speculation about possible divisions within the ruling party. As the 2027 elections approach, this meeting signals the growing momentum of opposition groups as they seek to consolidate forces and prepare for a more united challenge to the APC.
