EL-RUFAI TO REMAIN IN ICPC CUSTODY AS COURT FIXES BAIL RULING FOR APRIL 14

The Federal High Court in Kaduna has fixed April 14 to rule on the bail application filed by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

The presiding judge, Rilwanu Aikawa, adjourned the matter after hearing arguments from both the defence and prosecution.

Lead defence counsel, Adewole Iyamu, expressed optimism after the session, stating that the legal team had fully presented its case and was hopeful of a favourable outcome.

He also disclosed that El-Rufai is expected to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja on April 10 in a separate case filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), adding that all necessary legal documents have already been submitted.

Iyamu confirmed that the bail application was properly moved and responded to by the prosecution, noting that the defence is fully prepared for the upcoming Abuja hearing.

El-Rufai is currently facing a 10-count charge bordering on corruption brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). He had previously been in ICPC custody from February 19 until March 28, when he was temporarily released following the death of his mother in Cairo, Egypt.

In a related development, the former governor has withdrawn his N1 billion fundamental rights enforcement suit against a magistrate in Abuja after issues were raised regarding the proper identification of one of the defendants.

Observers are now awaiting the court’s decision on the bail application, as well as further developments in the separate case before the Abuja court.
