Tech entrepreneur and owner of X (formerly Twitter), Elon Musk, stirred global debate on Saturday after openly urging the dissolution of the European Union and the return of full political authority to its individual member states.

Posting on his X account, Musk wrote:
“The EU should be abolished, and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that governments can better represent their people.”
His remarks come at a time when the European Union is navigating internal disputes ranging from the rise of nationalist movements to clashes over migration policy and long-standing tensions regarding how much authority should lie in Brussels versus national capitals.

Across several EU nations, calls for renegotiating treaties or reclaiming more domestic control have risen in recent years, even though overall public support for the bloc remains relatively strong.
Musk’s comments also surface amid ongoing conflict between X and European regulators. Since he acquired the platform, EU officials have repeatedly accused X of failing to meet the requirements of the Digital Services Act (DSA) — a law that demands strict content moderation, increased transparency, and tighter measures against misinformation.
Brussels has already opened formal investigations into X’s moderation policies, warning that the platform could face sanctions if it is determined to be in violation of the DSA.
Reactions to Musk’s post were swift and divided. Some users interpreted his message as aligning with Eurosceptic movements, while critics accused him of meddling in complex political issues far beyond his field.

One user, @OopsGuess, responded pointedly:
“If dismantling supranational authority is ‘freedom,’ then perhaps the U.S. should also break itself up — give each state full sovereignty, let Texans speak for Texas and Californians for California. Why should Washington govern 330 million people like one empire?”
The same user added that Musk’s argument for decentralization appeared selective:
“You call for breaking up the EU for democracy, but a continental federation seems fine when the capital is yours. If fragmentation is a virtue, lead by example — start with disbanding America.”

As of the time this report was filed, EU officials had not released any formal statements regarding Musk’s comments.
Musk, known for weighing in on global politics via his platform, has increasingly positioned himself as a critic of centralized governance. His call to dismantle one of the world’s largest political and economic unions is expected to fuel ongoing discussions about the growing influence of tech billionaires in shaping public debate worldwide.
