#FG Approves 50% Telecom Tariff Adjustment Amid Economic Challenges

The Federal Government has approved a 50% tariff adjustment for telecom operators in Nigeria, citing rising operational costs and the need to sustain the industry.

NCC’s Decision

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced the adjustment on Monday, explaining that it aligns with its regulatory mandate under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003. This section empowers the NCC to oversee and approve tariff rates within the sector.

The approved increase is significantly lower than the over 100% hike proposed by some network providers.

Implementation Details

  • The new tariffs will remain within the existing 2013 tariff bands.
  • Implementation will follow the NCC’s 2024 Guidance on Tariff Simplification to ensure transparency.

Commitment to Consumers

While acknowledging the economic hardship faced by Nigerians, the NCC emphasized its commitment to protecting consumers and maintaining affordability in telecom services.

This adjustment reflects a balance between sustaining the telecommunications industry and addressing the economic realities affecting both operators and consumers.
