FG Approves Over ₦6tn for New Road Projects and Variations Nationwide — Works Minister Umahi

The Federal Government has approved a fresh wave of road projects and contract variations across the country, totaling over ₦6 trillion. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced the approvals during a recent briefing, highlighting significant investments in critical highway corridors and upgrades to existing roads.

Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway Gets Over ₦2.8tn Approval

One of the biggest projects is the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, a massive dual carriageway set to connect the northwest to the southwest.

  • Kebbi Section: 258 km (dual lanes) approved at ₦1.92 trillion

  • Sokoto Section: 120 km (dual lanes) approved at ₦912 billion

The minister noted that the highway is part of the government’s plan to boost regional integration and economic activity through improved road infrastructure.

Major Road Revisions Across States

Several previously awarded road contracts have been revised due to funding limitations, technical challenges, or scope expansions:

  • Biu–Numa Road (Borno/Adamawa): Revised upward from ₦15.4 billion to ₦61.76 billion

  • Maraba–Keffi Road (Nasarawa): Dualization of 43.6 km approved at ₦76 billion

  • Ikorodu–Sagamu Road (Lagos): An additional ₦11.42 billion approved for project completion

  • Kashamu–Amshi–Guru–Gurus Road (Yobe): Revised to ₦23.4 billion to cover binder courses and construction of a new vehicle bridge

  • Afe Babalola University Access Road (Ekiti): Now revised to 14.4 km at ₦9.32 billion, citing funding constraints

  • Trans-Saharan Highway (Oyo–Benue border): Extended from 180 km to 231.64 km, with cost revised to ₦445.8 billion due to soil failures and realignment

  • Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway (Sections 4A & 4B, Ogun and Ondo States): 80.35 km dual carriageway approved at ₦1.65 trillion, featuring a 6-meter deep excavation in swampy terrain

Abuja Road Projects: Lot Details and Funding Status

The Abuja Road Corridor, split into two major construction lots, was also highlighted:

  • Lot 1: 118 km at ₦275 billion30% of funds disbursed, with 30% work completion

  • Lot 2: 164 km at ₦502 billion₦150 billion disbursed across six sections

Other Key Federal Road Projects

Minister Umahi provided updates on other high-impact projects:

  • Enugu–Onitsha Road (72 km): ₦150 billion approved; ₦45 billion released

  • Abuja–Kano Road: ₦220 billion total; 30% disbursed

  • Bauchi–Jigawa Road Sections: Fully funded

  • Nembe–Brass Road (Bayelsa): ₦156 billion approved; 30% funds released

  • Port Harcourt–Bodo–Bonny Road (Rivers): 35 km project nearing completion at a cost of ₦200 billion

  • Benin–Ifon–Akure Road (108.4 km): Funding at 30% release stage

  • Akure–Ado-Ekiti Road (256 km): ₦761 billion total cost; 30% funds disbursed

Umahi Reaffirms FG’s Infrastructure Commitment

Minister Umahi assured Nigerians that the Bola Tinubu administration is prioritizing infrastructure as a key enabler of national development. He added that the Ministry of Works is committed to fast-tracking ongoing road constructions while ensuring transparency and value for money in all federally funded projects.

“Our mission is to ensure all federal roads serve the people efficiently and boost economic activities across all zones,” Umahi said.
