The Federal Government has officially launched the construction of Phase 2B of the Second Niger Bridge access road, a crucial step toward improving transportation infrastructure and regional connectivity in the South-East.
At the groundbreaking ceremony held at Ogbunike (33 Nkwelle Junction) along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, President Bola Tinubu, represented by Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, highlighted the importance of the project. He noted that while the Second Niger Bridge, inaugurated in 2023, has eased travel between the South-East and other regions, incomplete access roads have limited its full benefits.
Project Scope and Features
The Phase 2B construction will cover 17.5km of dual carriageway, featuring:
✅ Seven bridges
✅ Modern road infrastructure
✅ Security cameras along its corridors
The road will run from the Umunya/Ogbunike axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, through the Old Enugu Road Interchange, Ogidi, Nkpor-Umuoji Road Interchange, and Asaba-Igbuzor Road Interchange, culminating at Valley Bridge.
FG’s Commitment to Infrastructure Development
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, stated:
🔹 30% of the contract sum has already been disbursed, with payments tied to construction progress.
🔹 He urged local communities to support the project and avoid disruptions.
🔹 President Tinubu remains committed to the South-East’s development, as reflected in key federal appointments.
State-Federal Government Partnership
Gov. Soludo emphasized that the Second Niger Bridge project would remain incomplete until the entire 35km access road is fully constructed.
🔸 He urged traditional rulers and community leaders to ensure that local youths do not obstruct construction activities.
🔸 Anambra has already invested over N150 billion in federal roads.
🔸 The dualization of key roads is essential for preventing future congestion and boosting economic growth.
Contractor’s Assurance
CGC Nigeria Limited, represented by its General Manager, Gius Cheng, pledged to complete the project on schedule, adhering to the highest quality standards.
The ceremony concluded with traditional blessings led by Igwe Awkuzu, invoking success for the project.
