The Federal Government has announced an ambitious plan to upgrade the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, incorporating state-of-the-art features to enhance safety, security, and functionality.
Modern Features for Enhanced Impact
Minister of Works, David Umahi, made this known during an inspection of Sections I and II of the highway project in Lagos, overseen by Hitech Construction Company Ltd. Umahi revealed that the revised plans include:
- Solar-Powered CCTV Surveillance: Cameras will be installed along the entire 750-kilometre stretch to monitor and ensure security.
- Lay-Bys with Security Posts: These will be strategically placed every few kilometres to facilitate quick emergency responses.
- Tree Planting Initiatives: Enhancing environmental sustainability along the highway.
“These features will align the project with modern infrastructure standards,” Umahi said. “This wasn’t part of the original plan, but we’re prioritizing safety, aesthetics, and functionality.”
A Vision of Development
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of four major “Renewed Hope” legacy projects initiated under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. The initiative aims to boost economic activities, foster regional connectivity, and improve Nigeria’s transportation network.
Umahi highlighted efforts to balance infrastructure development across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, using milestone-based project execution to ensure equitable progress.
Project Timeline and Expansion Plans
The minister stated that portions of the Lagos-Calabar Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway would be ready for commissioning by May 2025.
Additionally, construction of a train track along the Lagos-Calabar route is slated to commence in 2025, further enhancing regional connectivity and economic integration.
Progress Amid Challenges
Despite initial setbacks, the project is advancing steadily. Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, Federal Controller of Works, expressed optimism about meeting deadlines, commending the contractor’s resilience and commitment.
Umahi reiterated the government’s dedication to addressing Nigeria’s infrastructure deficits. “These projects are a cornerstone of our strategy to meet the country’s transportation needs and foster economic growth,” he concluded.
This modernization effort marks a significant step in transforming Nigeria’s road infrastructure, ensuring safer and more efficient travel for citizens and businesses.
