#First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Visits Babangida and Abdulsalami in Minna, Strengthening Ties with Nigeria’s Past Leaders

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, paid a courtesy visit to former Military President General Ibrahim Babangida and former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar at their residences in Minna, Niger State.

Arriving at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, she was warmly received by Niger State Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago and his wife, Fatima Bago. Accompanied by the wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima, Mrs. Tinubu proceeded to Babangida’s residence for a private meeting lasting approximately 35 minutes.

She later visited General Abdulsalami Abubakar, where she was graciously welcomed. Expressing his appreciation, the retired leader noted, “It is heartwarming to have the First Lady check up on my welfare.”

The visits reflect Mrs. Tinubu’s commitment to fostering goodwill, honoring Nigeria’s elder statesmen, and reinforcing national unity.

A Look at Their Legacies

General Ibrahim Babangida led Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, implementing economic reforms such as the Structural Adjustment Program (SAP). His tenure remains controversial due to the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, believed to have been won by Moshood Abiola.

General Abdulsalami Abubakar became Head of State in 1998 after General Sani Abacha’s sudden death. He is widely credited for overseeing Nigeria’s transition from military rule to democracy, culminating in the 1999 election that brought Olusegun Obasanjo to power.

By engaging with these influential figures, the First Lady reaffirms the administration’s respect for Nigeria’s history and the role of past leaders in shaping the nation.
