#Former Lagos Speaker Obasa Faces Arrest Over Alleged ₦43.5bn Fraud

Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, is set to be arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) upon his return to Nigeria. The move follows allegations of misappropriating ₦43.5 billion in state funds, which led to his impeachment on Monday.

Sources within the EFCC revealed to Peoples Gazette that Obasa, currently in the United States, will face intense scrutiny as the agency compiles what it describes as an “overwhelming” case against him.

“This time, the evidence is solid and comprehensive,” an anonymous EFCC insider stated. “We are prepared to take decisive action, and he won’t be able to evade justice.”

Obasa’s troubles escalated after a report exposed his extravagant expenditures, including luxury back-up vehicles, which fueled the impeachment process. Despite previously surviving an EFCC probe in 2020 over allegations of spending ₦1.1 billion in a week, the current case is believed to leave little room for escape.

Adding to his woes, Obasa appears to have lost key political allies, including support from President Bola Tinubu. Reports suggest that his calls to Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila have gone unanswered, signaling his isolation from influential figures.

“His political connections are gone. He’s on his own now,” a source familiar with the matter revealed.

Obasa’s political future remains uncertain, with speculation about whether he will return to Nigeria to serve as a floor member in the House of Assembly or attempt to evade scrutiny. The EFCC, however, has assured that no political interference will disrupt its plans to apprehend him.

“He will face our investigators and explain his actions,” an EFCC source confirmed, underscoring the agency’s determination to ensure accountability.
