#From Almajiri to NNPC CEO: Mele Kyari Shares His Remarkable Journey

Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), has reflected on his inspiring journey from being an Almajiri pupil to leading Africa’s largest energy company.

On his 60th birthday, January 8, Kyari shared his story of transformation, attributing his success to divine grace and the support of his mentors, colleagues, and family. He expressed deep gratitude to former President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting him with leadership roles, including serving as the last Group Managing Director of NNPC and the first CEO of NNPC Ltd.

In a heartfelt message on his verified social media account, Kyari wrote:

“Allah, by His grace, spared my life to this exceptional day, marking my 60th year from birth, even earlier on the Hijri calendar. I am profoundly grateful to my country for giving me the opportunity to grow from an Almajiri (Tsangaya) school pupil to becoming the CEO of Africa’s largest energy company. I deeply appreciate the exceptional privilege given to me by Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu to serve as the last GMD of the NNPC and the pioneer CEO of NNPC Ltd.

Reflecting on my journey—through good and bad times, triumphs and travails, pains and happiness, failures and successes—I realize that only the sufficiency of Allah can explain it. At this milestone, I feel the obligation to serve with greater conviction and a higher expectation of eternal recompense so deeply pleasing.”

Kyari also acknowledged the sacrifices of his family and expressed appreciation for their support, despite his frequent absences due to national duties.

“I am hugely indebted to my family for being nearly absent for most of my later years, serving our nation and the common good. My deep gratitude goes to my family, friends, associates, colleagues at work, and my teachers—both Western and Almajiri—who have played significant roles in my accomplishments and well-being,” he added.

Concluding his message, Kyari asked for forgiveness from anyone he might have hurt, intentionally or otherwise, and reaffirmed his commitment to serving with humility and dedication in the years ahead.

Kyari’s inspiring story of resilience and transformation serves as a beacon of hope, highlighting the power of hard work, divine providence, and support from a community in overcoming life’s challenges.
